Traffic timing: Peak crush is roughly 7–10 a.m. westbound and 3–7 p.m. eastbound, especially near the MacArthur Maze and the Bay Bridge. If you can, time your pass-through for mid‑day or after 8 p.m. to avoid stop‑and‑go backups.
Speed traps & lane discipline: California Highway Patrol often watches the downhill stretch from the Carquinez Bridge and the approaches to the Bay Bridge. In heavy traffic, locals expect you to commit to a lane; constant weaving is more likely to get you cut off than help you move faster.
Bridge toll & lanes: Eastbound on the Bay Bridge is free; westbound into SF is tolled and mostly cashless—have FasTrak or be ready for license-plate billing. Stay out of far-left “FasTrak only” lanes if you don’t have a tag, as lane changes get hectic near the toll plaza.
Wind and microclimates: The Carquinez and Richmond–San Rafael bridge areas can get strong crosswinds, especially in the afternoon; keep a firm grip if you’re in a high-profile vehicle. Summer “fog hours” near SF can drop visibility quickly in the evening even if it was sunny in the Central Valley.
